The Department of History of Art at Birkbeck is expanding, and is looking to appoint internationally established scholars to help lead growth in areas of excellence. As part of this expansion, the Department invites applications for a permanent senior academic post in the History and Theory of Architecture. This will underpin the expansion of our current portfolio of taught programmes, research initiatives (including funded research), collaborations with external organisations and public engagement initiatives. Applications are welcome from scholars working in any period of architectural history, from medieval through to contemporary.
The Department combines world-class research activities and outputs with a strong teaching mission, and is situated in the School of Arts, a leading centre for critical and interdisciplinary work in the Arts and Humanities. This post will build on a current research and teaching strength embedded in Birkbeck’s Architecture, Space and Society Research Centre. The Centre provides a vibrant hub for scholarship in the area of architectural, design, and landscape history, contemporary architectural humanities and archaeology.
The successful candidate for this post will have a track record of internationally-recognised research, including successful grant bids as well as published work of a calibre which meets the standards of the Research Excellence Framework, and clear plans for future research. They will be able fully to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and programme development, undertake senior administrative duties, and be prepared to work collaboratively with colleagues across the School.
Salary: Grade 9 (Senior Lecturer/Reader) of the College's London Pay Scale which is £52,780 rising to £58,939 per annum.
Grade 10 (Professor) of the College's London Pay Scale which has a minimum salary of £60,597 per annum.
This post is full time, 35 hours per week and open-ended. The salary quoted above is on the College's London Pay Scale and includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. The initial salary will be dependent on the skills and experience of the successful applicant. The appointment is subject to a probationary period of 3 years.
