The Miller Center at the University of Virginia seeks to hire an ASSISTANT or ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR in Presidential Studies. This position will report to the Chair of the Presidential Recordings Program and will focus on transcribing and analyzing the secret White House tapes made by U.S. presidents from 1940 through 1973. It will also support the writing and publication of interpretive scholarship based on the presidential recordings and the candidate’s individual research agenda, particularly as it relates to the broader scholarly initiatives of Presidential Studies and the Miller Center.
The assistant or associate professor will work on-site at the Miller Center as part of a team of scholars transcribing and analyzing the White House tapes and as part of the Miller Center’s broader intellectual community. As a member of the University’s General Faculty, this position is tenure-ineligible and carries a fixed term of three years; however, it also offers the possibility of continual renewal and is eligible for consideration of Expectation of Continued Employment. Qualifications
- Significant and demonstrated knowledge of modern American political history, particularly of the period of the 1960s and 1970s, required
- Demonstrated record of excellence in historical research, required
- Demonstrated familiarity and comfort in working with digital technologies, required
- Attention to detail and the ability to devote extended hours to meticulous work, required
- Ability to be in residence at the Miller Center for the term of the appointment, required
- PhD, or its equivalent, required, preferably in Modern American History or Modern American Politics or a closely-related field
- Experience working with university faculty and/or within a university environment, preferred
