University of Northwestern – St. Paul, founded in 1902, is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Ancient History in the Department of History & Related Fields. Northwestern is an evangelical, nondenominational Christian institution offering both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Northwestern is an intentional community of faith, living, and learning. The Department of History at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul, Minnesota seeks a full-time, permanent appointment at the assistant or associate level in the field of Ancient History. Any area or era of the Near East and Mediterranean world (including late antiquity) will be considered, but the successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to connect his or her knowledge with the world of the Bible and with the field of archaeology. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the ability to teach an outside field on some region of non-western modern world history (such as the History of the Middle East). The appointee will teach upper-level undergraduate classes in Ancient History, as well as support the department and university by teaching the introductory History of Western Civilization course. In rotation, the faculty member may support the department in teaching classes on historical methods or the senior-level history seminar.
Ph.D. with area of specialization in the Ancient World required. ABD applicants will be considered. Ph.D. in History strongly preferred, but Ph.D. in a related field will be considered. Secondary specialization in some area of modern world history (e.g. Modern Middle Eastern History) preferred.Demonstrated teaching experience at the college or university level and commitment to scholarship through publication and academic presentations.
Teaching a combination of general education history courses (specifically, History of Western Civilization), upper-level courses in the history of the Ancient World, and service courses supporting the major and minors of the Department of History and Related Fields. Advising History majors, fulfilling assigned departmental duties, holding office hours, and attending department meetings and other functions as requested by the Department Chair, College Dean or Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.
The Department of History and Related Fields aims to shape reflective human beings who possess both historical knowledge and the ability to read deeply, think historically and critically, and communicate well. In this pursuit, the department emphasizes the quartet of areas of the Ancient World, Modern Europe, the United States, and the Non-Western World and places unique emphasis on the World of the Bible and the History of Christianity. The Department offers a History Major and Minor, coordinates with the Social Studies Education Program, and supports the Core Curriculum of the University with its History of Western Civilization course.
The 100-acre campus is nestled along the shore of Lake Johanna in the northern Saint Paul suburbs. The downtown areas of both Saint Paul and Minneapolis can be reached within 15 minutes, providing easy access to hundreds of cultural and recreational activities in the Twin Cities.
