ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF HISTORY
The Department of History of the University of Wisconsin Colleges invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor with the training necessary to teach surveys in Western Civilization and World History to start in the fall 2016.
THE CAMPUS: The growing UW-Rock County campus enrolls more than 1100 students and is located on 50 rolling acres on the southwest side of Wisconsin's City of Parks, Janesville, and includes a new state-of-the-art Engineering Center, library, classrooms and computer labs. With an emphasis on small classes and individualized student attention, UW-Rock County offers outstanding liberal arts education at the freshman-sophomore level. The largest city in the county, Janesville has a small-town feel and, with nearby Beloit and the other smaller Rock County communities, provides ample opportunities for recreation, education and entertainment. In addition, the added convenience of the urban amenities are within easy driving distance in Madison (40 miles), Milwaukee (85 miles), Rockford (30 miles) and Chicago (100 miles). THE INSTITUTION: The University of Wisconsin Colleges is the freshman-sophomore liberal arts transfer institution of the world-renowned University of Wisconsin System. The UW Colleges comprises thirteen two-year campuses around the state, plus UWC Online, each of which offers an excellent liberal arts and pre-professional education for students beginning work toward a bachelor’s degree. RESPONSIBILITIES: The academic year teaching assignment is 24 credits. The ability to incorporate global perspectives into a general history curriculum is essential. The Colleges offers alternative technology enhanced courses and teaching in an alternative delivery mode as part of the 24 credit load (i.e. online and/or hybrid courses) is expected. In addition to freshmen courses in Western Civilizations and World History, additional upper level courses may be offered in European history and fields that broaden the candidate’s expertise beyond Europe to include Ancient or Asian History.
As teacher-scholars, we seek candidates with experience as an instructor of university freshman-sophomore level courses, experience teaching and engaging in diverse population of students, and a commitment to continuing professional development. This tenure-track position requires scholarly activity in the discipline, a commitment to professional development and participation in campus and institutional service. QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD in History with specialization in European or World History and teaching experience in higher education or closely related is required.
