Egyptology Lecturer I
Department of Near Eastern Studies
University of Michigan
The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan invites applicants for a full-time (100%) lecturer position in Egyptology beginning September 1, 2016. This is a two-year, non-tenure-track university year appointment, renewable for an additional multi-year period, contingent upon successful performance. Teaching load will be determined by departmental needs, but is expected to be three courses per semester.
We seek a candidate specializing in the history, art history, and language of the ancient Egyptian New Kingdom, with expertise also in Egypt’s interactions with the ancient Near East during this time of empire. Candidates must have a Ph.D., and are also expected to have native or near-native proficiency in English. It is expected that they will have experience in teaching and curriculum development and will be committed to maintaining and enhancing Egyptology at the University of Michigan. Candidates must produce evidence of substantial, innovative research in their field of specialization. The successful candidate will offer instruction in Middle Egyptian and Late Egyptian (with the possibility of teaching other phases of the Egyptian language, such as Old Egyptian, Demotic and/or Coptic, depending on the candidate’s expertise), participate in the departmental rotation of existing large scale lecture courses on ancient Egypt, and will design smaller courses focused on the topics listed above. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s training and experience, and the candidate will also be eligible to apply for internal professional development funding.
Only online applications will be accepted. To apply and upload your material, go to http://tinyurl.com/pkcv3zs. You will need (1) a cover letter stating your interest in the position and detailing your teaching experience and research profile; (2) CV (including courses taught and materials used); (3) statement of teaching philosophy; and (4) names and email addresses of three referees who will be asked to upload their letter separately.
Review of the applications will begin December 4, 2015 and will continue until the position is filled.
