The UC Berkeley Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) is now accepting applications for the position of Vice Chair. The Vice Chair works closely with the CMES Chair to develop the near‐ and long‐term intellectual vision of the CMES and help shape the nature of Middle Eastern studies at UC Berkeley. The CMES is a federally‐designated Title VI National Resource Center—one of 15 such centers devoted to the study of the Middle East nationally—and an interdisciplinary hub for Middle Eastern studies across disciplines and departments on campus. Each year the CMES provides roughly half‐a‐million dollars in direct support to students and faculty; contributes significant funds to departments to ensure the teaching of Middle Eastern languages and area studies courses; organizes a rich interdisciplinary lecture, workshop, and film series; hosts visiting scholars; organizes trainings on teaching about the Middle East for K‐14 and community college educators; and collaborates with local, national, and international partners on scholarly initiatives related to the Middle East. The Vice Chair position is central both to the everyday function and the future growth of the CMES. Duties include:
- Working with the Chair to develop a strategic plan for the CMES, with the aim of elevating the profile of Middle Eastern studies on campus and beyond, including internationally.
- Establishing the CMES’s first concerted, formal development effort, including regular donor research and cultivation, grant‐writing, and other fundraising activities.
- Managing the CMES Title VI grant, i.e., monitoring the priorities of the Department of Education, positioning CMES programs to align with these priorities, developing a budget, and managing both the proposal‐writing and post‐proposal reporting and evaluation processes required by the grant.
- Preparing written materials that represent the CMES to public audiences.
- Refining and bringing thematic coherence to the CMES visiting scholar and distinguished visitor programs.
- Collaborating with CMES staff to expand existing programs—including the Graduate Student Professional Development Program—and developing new programs to expand the reach of the CMES on and off‐campus.
- Providing support to CMES faculty affiliates
- Fulfilling certain duties of the CMES Chair when s/he is unavailable.
