The University of Maryland invites applications from highly accomplished musicians, scholars, and educators to serve as Director of the School of Music. The successful candidate will be qualified to hold the rank of Professor with tenure in the School, and will serve a five-year term anticipated to begin July 1, 2016. The directorship is a 12-month administrative appointment.
As the School’s chief academic and administrative officer, the Director shall provide vision and leadership in working with faculty, staff, students, and the wider University of Maryland community. The Director shall support excellence in musical scholarship and performance; advance the highest quality of undergraduate and graduate teaching and learning; nurture creativity among faculty and students; support diversity and inclusion in arts education and programming; actively pursue partnerships in the State of Maryland; develop strong relationships with donors, educational institutions, and arts organizations, especially in the Baltimore-Washington region; build the School’s resources through fundraising in collaboration with the development teams for the College of Arts and Humanities and the University of Maryland; as well as maintain and strengthen the School’s international prominence.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of five years of academic or equivalent professional administrative experience, with a strong record of successful innovation and strategic initiative, is strongly preferred. Either a terminal degree (Ph.D., D.M.A., or D.M.) in a music or music education field or equivalent professional arts leadership experience consistent with the University’s requirements for a tenured faculty member in the School of Music is required.
