Bates College, History
Assistant Professor of African History
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Maine, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor |
Bates College seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of African history. Field and period of specialization are open, but we are particularly interested in candidates who can present African historical experiences in global perspective and who can contribute to interdisciplinary programs at Bates. We strongly prefer a candidate who will focus their work on sub-Saharan Africa and have significant experience researching in one or more sub-Saharan languages. The annual five-course teaching load includes a survey of African history, upper division thematic courses, and senior thesis advising. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have Ph.D. in hand by the time the appointment begins.
Bates College is committed to enhancing the diversity of the campus and the curriculum. We welcome applications from all individuals with the ability to contribute to the college’s continuing commitment to social and cultural diversity, inclusiveness, and the transformative power of our differences. The search committee expects applicants to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas and describe how their research, teaching, and/or outreach can further this goal.
Because Bates faculty will be attending the African Studies Association Annual Conference in San Diego, candidates attending the conference who would like to meet informally about the position should contact the search chair for more information.
Application Instructions
Review of applications begins on November 20, 2015, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit the following: a cover letter (including a description of the candidate’s experience and interest in advancing the goals of diversity and inclusion described above), curriculum vitae, unofficial graduate transcripts, writing sample, and sample course syllabus (preferably for an introductory-level offering), and three letters of recommendation. At least one referenced should speak to teaching experience or capabilities.
Bates College is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer. Because the College recognizes that employment decisions often involve two careers, Bates welcomes applications for shared positions. For more information about the College, please visit the Bates website: www.bates.edu.
