two tenure-track positions, one in Latin American History and one in African/a History; Assistant or Associate Professor
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Illinois, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor, Associate Professor |
History- Augustana College applications for two tenure-track positions, one in Latin American History and one in African/a History, to begin with the 2016-2017 academic year. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus. Rock Island, Illinois is one of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents about three hours west of Chicago.
Candidates at the Assistant Professor rank will be considered for the Latin American History position; the Africana/a history position is open to candidates at either the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Teaching responsibilities for both positions include introductory history courses, upper-level history seminars in the areas of the candidates’ expertise, and interdisciplinary courses in Augustana’s innovative first-year liberal studies program. The department seeks candidates with dynamic teaching strategies, the ability to develop classroom pedagogies that foster historical thinking, and a keen interest in teaching and advising undergraduate students. For both positions, we seek candidates with broad expertise, but for the Latin American position, we prefer candidates with teaching and research interests in memory studies, colonialism and imperialism, world history, or pre-20th century topics. For the African/a position, we are particularly interested in candidates with teaching and research interests in diasporic studies, Islamic history, or digital history. Candidates for both positions should be prepared to propose, coordinate, and lead study abroad programs; accordingly, applicants must be able to negotiate with academics and officials abroad. Ph.D. preferred. ABD may apply. A Ph.D. in hand by August 2016 is expected. The college is on a trimester calendar with a typical load of 7 courses, with a one-course reduction the first year.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, the candidates must be able to serve as advisors and mentors to a growing cohort of racially and ethnically diverse undergraduates, to promote the success of a diverse student population, and to provide leadership and vision to our interdisciplinary programs in Latin American and Africana Studies, respectively.
Our department regards faculty scholarship as crucial to engaged teaching, and the college offers support for faculty development and research in the form of workshop opportunities, research grants, travel support, pre-tenure paid leave, and post-tenure sabbaticals. Service to the college and the department is expected.
