The Department of History at the University of Alabama seeks a historian of the American South, 1815-1877, to fill the Charles G. Summersell Chair in Southern History. Competitive candidates may specialize in subfields including but not limited to the Civil War and Reconstruction, the history of slavery, intellectual history, religious history, gender history, political history, and social and cultural history. The successful candidate, who must have a PhD in history, will be hired at the rank of full professor, will be expected to have a publication record and teaching experience commensurate with that rank, and will be well placed to attract and direct the work of graduate students in the candidate’s field of expertise.
