DESCRIPTION:
The Executive Director (ED) of the Reischauer Institute plays a key role in building coordinated programs for Harvard’s research and teaching engagement with Japan. The ED works closely with the Faculty Director in providing strategic leadership of the Reischauer Institute.
- In close partnership with the Faculty Director, Assistant Director, and in consultation with the Executive Committee, conceptualizes and develops new programs, strategies, and initiatives to advance the academic, research, and programmatic agenda of the Institute.
- Develops new and promotes existing relationships with Institute affiliates, alumni, scholars, organizations, and institutions in the U.S., Japan, and beyond.
- Manages the implementation of Institute grants programs including: faculty research grants, postdoctoral fellowships, and prizes and grants to graduate and undergraduate students.
- Plans and manages the undergraduate student internship program, identifying suitable host organizations in Japan, meeting with students, organizing information sessions, ensuring appropriate placement and compliance with University guidelines for travel abroad.
- Coordinates the Harvard Summer School Programs in Japan, liaising with administrative staff of Harvard Summer School, its faculty, students, and host institutions and related organizations in Japan. Organizes meetings and information sessions for students.
- Collaborates with the Japanese Studies Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library to ensure the development of new library resources that meet the research needs of faculty and students.
- Supervises the operation of Documentation Center for Contemporary Japan Library and manages its efforts to complement the Japan holdings available at Harvard and to develop new initiatives for the access and use of digital information and resources.
- Oversees and produces Institute communications, including website content, newsletters, annual reports and other related materials.
- Oversees the broad array of Institute activities: exhibitions, lectures, workshops, conferences, symposia, study groups, film screenings, receptions, and other special events.
- Supports, in consultation with faculty, research assistants, and staff, the Japan Disasters Digital Archive Project and the Constitutional Revision in Japan Research Project.
- Administers Institute Executive Committee meetings. In consultation with the Faculty Director and Assistant Director develops agendas/discussion items and ensures implementation of action items.
- Manages Institute staff. With the Assistant Director, provides leadership on issues of staff development, delegation of work, performance expectations, and team-building.
- Networks and collaborates with other regional research centers within Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS), museums, libraries, and other relevant schools and departments of the University.
- Represents the Institute with FAS administration.
- Participates in FAS and University-wide committees and initiatives as appropriate.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degree in a related discipline or equivalent professional experience.
- Broad knowledge of Japanese studies and familiarity with current affairs in Japan/Asia.
- Minimum of five-plus years of progressively responsible management experience in academic or research administration, including significant experience working with faculty.
- Experience managing staff.
- Proficiency in Japanese.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent English-language oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to represent the Faculty Director and Institute effectively at all levels of the University and with external constituents and peer institutions.
- Project management experience. Demonstrated ability to engage in strategic planning and to plan/manage a broad range of research and related activities in the field of Japanese studies.
- Demonstrated experience as an organized and dynamic leader with ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Personal experience living and working in Japan. Familiarity with Harvard desirable.

The Reischauer Institute is committed to programmatic activities to support faculty research and teaching, student engagement in study and research of Japan, and a series of programs that enhance understanding of Japan and the region. The activities of the Reischauer Institute are University-wide, and engage faculty and students from the humanities, social sciences, sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (including the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) and across the University’s professional schools. The Reischauer Institute has a strong reputation within the University as a successful regional studies center with an excellent record as a multi-disciplinary, research-driven, service-oriented, and innovative organization engaging faculty and students in a range of research and activities.
