The History Department at Macalester College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in post-1861 African-American history to begin Fall 2016. The appointment may be made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Ph.D. required. Preference for candidates who can teach African-American history in a global context. Possible area of specialization could include progressive reform; public history; gender history; the history of social and political movements; the history of diasporic intellectual, artistic and political movements; or the history of African and Caribbean immigration to the United States.

Diversifying our curriculum geographically, temporally, and thematically is a high priority, so evidence of comparative and cross-cultural scholarship is especially welcome. Evidence of methodological innovation and creative teaching strategies is also highly desirable. Please consult the History website at Macalester College for our current offerings. If appropriate, successful candidates can play important roles in the college’s interdisciplinary programs, including American Studies; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and the First Year Seminar Program.
