Assistant Professor, Performance History, pre-1800
The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at UC Berkeley is conducting a search for a tenure-track, assistant professor of theater or performance history with an expected start date of July 1, 2016. The ideal candidate will have a strong early-career record of research and undergraduate teaching experience in the theater or performance history of any geographical region prior to 1800. We are especially interested in the histories of non-European performance traditions, but will also carefully consider European specialists. Candidates will be expected to teach core courses in theater history, theory, and literature for both our undergraduate and doctoral programs, train students in historical research methods, to serve on departmental committees, and maintain a productive scholarly profile. Candidates with additional facility with the theoretical core of Performance Studies would also be welcome. We are very interested in candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.
Basic qualification for this position is the completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation for a PhD or equivalent degree in theater, performance studies or a related humanities field at the time of application. Additional qualifications include a research specialization in the performance histories of any geographical location prior to 1800; evidence of a strong early‐career record of research (conference participation, publication, etc); and PhD or equivalent degree in hand by start date. Preferred qualifications include some undergraduate teaching experience in the candidate’s field of specialization; the ability to conceptualize the candidate’s area of specialization in a global context; facility with the theoretical core of Performance Studies.
