The School of Culture and Society at the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for an associate professorship in urban history. With the job follows the position as Director of the Danish Centre of Urban History, which is organised and financed in collaboration with Den Gamle By Museum (the Old Town, Open-Air Museum) in Aarhus.
The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 February 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
We are seeking a visionary and dedicated historian with research qualifications in the fields of urbanity and the history and culture of urban spaces. The applicant should be able to contribute new research in relation to national and international fields of urban history. As centre director, the successful applicant is expected to pursue and develop research and communication projects in partnership with external partners as well as internally at the School of Culture and Society (SCS) at Aarhus University. The other half of the position is centred on Den Gamle By Museum (the Old Town, Open-Air Museum). The successful applicant will be responsible for managing the centre’s activities with research and dissemination activities at Den Gamle By and will participate in the museum’s work in these areas. The position involves research, teaching and supervision as well as managerial tasks at the centre. One of the central tasks will consist of strengthening the ties between university and museum. The associate professor will report to the head of the department and have a shared work place at the Department of History and Classical Studies at SCS and Den Gamle By.
Research
The successful applicant must have strong research profile qualifications in the fields of urbanity and the history of urban spaces and culture within a time frame that ideally covers the period from the Middle Ages until the present. Research must be both deep and broad enough to qualify as an associate professor.
Education
The associate professor will be expected to teach and supervise students at all levels (BA, MA and PhD) and contribute to the development and application of innovative teaching methods involving (when possible) the facilities and collections of Den Gamle By. A special assignment of the job will consist of contributing to the development of the special study of cultural history within the MA programme in history.
Talent development
The associate professor is expected to contribute to talent development within the field of urban history. He/she will be expected to supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. Working at the museum
The associate professor must be able to participate in the ongoing work at Den Gamle By as well as being the facilitator of cross-institutional museum contacts in areas of urban history research, dissemination and exhibition work.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent qualifications in history, preferably within urban history, as well as documented teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship.
Applicants must furthermore be able to document:
- A strong international research profile.
- A relevant and internationally oriented publication profile.
- Experience of participation in collective research projects.
- Teaching experience in areas of relevance to urban history as well as mastery of academic English in the classroom.
- Museum experience in terms of research, dissemination and exhibitions.
- Participation in national and international networks.
- Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation.
- Experience of attracting external research funding.
- Experience of supervising student projects and an interest in researcher talent development.
