Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Editor of PMHB and Scholarly Programs Manager is to serve as editor-in-chief of the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. He or she also works with HSP staff to administer HSP’s research fellowship program and has general responsibility for HSP’s other scholarly programs. He or she is as an integral member of HSP’s Programs and Services division and contributes as appropriate to HSP’s education and public programming.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Serve as Editor-in-Chief for the Society’s scholarly journal, Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, including:
- Establish intellectual directions and content priorities for the journal
- Work with editorial board
- Recruit article and book review submissions and guest editors
- Recruit peer reviewers for manuscripts
- Review and edit articles, book reviews, and other content
- Plan, organize, and work with guest editors on yearly special issues
- Copyedit, proofread, and review proofs for each issue
- Establish subscription pricing and working with JSTOR and subscription agencies
- Explore options shifting to XML production
- Explore new forms of electronic content and new platforms
- Develop and manage PMHB budget
- Work with Associate Manager of Publications on production and administrative aspects of the journal
- Lead in planning, recruiting participation in, implementing, and assessing the Society’s symposia and other scholarly programs, working with the Society’s library staff and others as appropriate
- Oversee HSP’s Balch-Greenfield fellowship program, in coordination with HSP’s Director of Archives and Collections Management, and assist in administration of other fellowship programs
- Recruit selection committee to evaluate HSP Balch and Greenfield fellowship applications
- Read and evaluate select applications for scholarly merit and appropriateness for HSP collections
- Facilitate discussion with Balch-Greenfield committee and select HSP Balch and Greenfield fellows
- Advise potential fellowship applicants, in consultation with library staff
- Correspond with all Balch and Greenfield applicants, informing all of the decision rendered, and with all other selected fellows as appropriate
- Manage budgets for all fellowship cost centers
- Attend fellowship colloquia and monthly coffee breaks
- Organize HSP fellowship colloquia
- Serve as HSP liaison for outside fellowship programs (MCEAS, German Society, CHSMT)
- Work with Scholarly Programs Associate Manager on administration of fellowship program
- Represent the society to scholarly constituencies
- Participate in Programs and Services Division meetings and All-Staff meeting
- Participate in other division and HSP activities and events as required
Job Requirements and Qualifications:
This position requires a PhD degree in American history or related field. The successful candidate will have strong research and writing skills as well as strong computer skills. Significant experience in scholarly editing also desired. This position requires an individual who pays close attention to detail, is highly organized, and self-motivated. He/she must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions:
Center City Philadelphia. General office working environment.
