The Historical Office of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) is seeking to identify potential historians for contract positions that will be advertised for bid between July-Early August 2015, one for the Publications Program, and the other for the Applied History Program (Additional information about the mission of the OSD Historical office can be found at http://history.defense.gov.). Both positions require a Ph.D. in history and the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
The major responsibility for a contract position in the Office’s Publications Program includes writing a book-length manuscript in the Secretaries of Defense Historical Series. Volume XI will cover Secretaries of Defense Caspar Weinberger and Frank Carlucci during the second term of President Ronald Reagan, 1985-1989. Research will be in the classified and unclassified records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the national security files in the papers of President Reagan at the Ronald Reagan Library in California, the Weinberger Papers in the Library of Congress, and other relevant agencies and departments. Other duties include preparing for and conducting oral history interviews to complement documentary sources. The contract solicitation will be posted at a later date on FBO.gov
The major responsibilities of the contract research support position will include providing basic research for a future volume in the Secretaries of Defense Historical Series; conducting additional research as needed for Vol. VIII in the Secretaries of Defense Historical Series; copyediting historical manuscripts; managing distribution lists; cleaning up footnotes and filling gaps in sources for Vol. V in the Defense Acquisition History Series; and providing initial review of Special Studies manuscripts. Duties and responsibilities of a future potential contract historian in the Office’s Applied History Program include responding to requests for historical information from senior officials in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, preparing questions and background materials for oral history interviews, and writing short studies on special topics related to the history of the Department of Defense. Representatives of the OSD Historical Office will attend the Annual Meeting of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations from June 25-27 and will be available to meet with interested historians to provide information about contract opportunities.
