The Max Weber Foundation – International Humanities seeks to fill the following position at the German Historical Institute, Washington as of October 1, 2015: Research Fellow in Digital History.
The GHI Washington supports comparative, transnational, and transregional research with a transatlantic focus. It undertakes intermediate- and long-term projects in theoretically informed research and praxis-oriented research infrastructures, and it seeks to foster inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation.
The GHI seeks a scholar with a background in information or computer science as well as in historical research. The successful candidate will be responsible for expanding the GHI’s digital resources and offerings, and he/she will have the opportunity to develop a project of his/her own.
Responsibilities:
The Research Fellow in Digital History will be responsible for the management and ongoing development of the GHI’s web site and digital research infrastructure. He/she will work in close cooperation with librarians, the in-house IT manager, and external IT consultants. His/her responsibilities will include:
- evaluating the GHI’s current digital projects and offerings, developing and implementing new projects, and preparing funding applications for digital projects;
- managing the GHI’s web site and digital resources;
- working with the GHI’s research projects to create project websites and/or data banks;
- establishing software architecture and information systems for the further development of the GHI’s web site and digital resources;
- analyzing, preparing, and storing various data formats (texts, pictures, maps, audio and video sources) for the GHI’s databases and web site; preparing a plan for creating and maintaining metadata and linking data according to current best practices;
- analyzing the use of the GHI’s digital resources and online catalogues and users’ needs;
- overseeing strategic networking in the digital humanities both within and outside of the Max Weber Foundation;
- supervising interns and fellowship recipients working on GHI digital projects.
Qualifications:
- a university degree in a humanities discipline and/or in the field of information technology, and experience in historical research;
- expertise and experience in digital communications in the humanities;
- expertise in working methods in the digital humanities (metadata standards, application of semantic web technologies, linked open data, document encoding and processing, digital editions, open access publications, development of ontologies and annotation schemata, etc.)
- understanding of developments in the areas of information retrieval, data mining, and machine learning;
- practical experience in data management;
- understanding of a content management system and experience in web design;
- experience in project management and interdisciplinary cooperation;
- the ability to work with internal and external partners;
- good contacts in the digital humanities and the ability to develop new humanities research infrastructures and research projects with partners at other institutions and in other disciplines;
- a very good command of written and spoken English and, ideally, a working knowledge of German;
- excellent communications skills combined with a high degree of independent initiative, a strong sense of responsibility, and an aptitude for teamwork.
Additional Qualifications:
The successful candidate will ideally
- have earned a PhD in a relevant discipline;
- have experience in software development for scholarly applications;
- have experience in preparing grant applications and in organizing scholarly conferences;
- have a solid command of spoken and written German.

This full-time position carries a salary of $70,000–$80,000 (TVöd Bund (Entgeltungsgruppe 13), depending upon experience. The appointment is for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension. If the successful candidate is a resident of Germany, he/she will be eligible for foreign posting allowances in accordance with federal civil service regulations.
