History Associates is currently recruiting qualified individuals with experience in analog and digital archival arrangement and description. In anticipation of an exciting opportunity in New York City, History Associates is actively recruiting up to three full-time processing archivists and one digital archivist. The work is expected to run for approximately 3 years, with the option for an additional 2 years. Positions are full-time; 40 hours per week. Should History Associates be awarded this project, the expected start date is as early as June 1, 2015.
Work will be conducted at two sites; Manhattan and Long Island City. Applicant must be willing and able to commute between the two sites.
History Associates is a professional historical services firm with over thirty years of providing customized historical, archival, records management, museum and exhibit services to corporate, government, and non-profit organizations.
Job Description:
Working under the supervision of an on-site project manager and within strict deadlines, the processing archivists and digital archivist will work as part of a team to process and catalog up to 1,000 LF (per year) of unprocessed analog records and approximately 3TB of digital records belonging to an international humanitarian organization.
The processing archivists are expected to perform the following activities:
- Conduct records surveys
- Create collection hierarchies
- Sort collections
- Process according to the established hierarchies and an existing processing manual
- Describe records in HP TRIM Records Management System in accordance with ISAD(G)
In performing these tasks, the archivists will ensure accuracy of work and prepare material for digitization. All work will be subject to routine review by the project manager and client.
The digital archivist is expected to perform the following activities:
- Process, arrange, and describe all electronic and born-digital records
- Characterize electronic records as they are found in both hybrid and born-digital collections
- Generate appropriate metadata
- Prepare the files for ingest into HP TRIM Records Management System
- Describe the records in TRIM in accordance with ISAD(G)
The digital archivist may also assist in processing the analog material and must have demonstrated experience working with paper collections. All work will be subject to routine review by the project manager and client.
Education Requirements:
Master's degree in library science, history, or related discipline with a concentration in archival studies or archival courses, seminars, internships, or practica.
Work Experience Requirements: Processing Archivists
Minimum two years of experience arranging and describing analog records
Understanding of and experience in creating and implementing archival hierarchies for collections
Demonstrated practical knowledge of archival policies and procedures
Experience describing records according to the standards outlined in DACS
Proven examples of working under strict deadlines
Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others on a team
Ability to work independently and to exercise discretion, initiative, and judgment
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Work Experience Requirements: Digital Archivists
Minimum two years of experience arranging and describing electronic and analog records
Experience in creating disk images and preservation metadata, including fixity and file format information
Understanding of and experience in creating and implementing archival hierarchies for hybrid and born-digital collections
Comprehensive understanding of tools and programs available for processing electronic records
Experience describing records according to the standards outlined in DACS
Demonstrated practical knowledge of archival policies and procedures
Proven examples of working under strict deadlines
Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others on a team
Ability to work independently and to exercise discretion, initiative, and judgment
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience describing records according to the standards outlined in ISAD(G)
Experience identifying/classifying records according to an established classification system
Experience working in HP TRIM Records Management System
Demonstrated knowledge of the OAIS Reference Model
Certified Archivist (CA) or Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) credentials
