The Managing Editor of the Handbook of Texas is responsible for coordinating the research, editorial processes, publication, and dissemination of material for the Handbook of Texas in both electronic and print formats. The position will be responsible for developing and implementing plans based on information provided through a collaborative effort with the Chief Historian, Director of Operations, Handbook Editors, and other Program Managers in the Association's offices in Austin beginning in April 2015.
Preferred candidates will have graduate work in Texas studies and experience in scholarly publication, digital publishing, web development, and project management. An ability to effectively interact with diverse audiences, such as authors, tech staff, potential funders, and the general public is very important.
Duties include:
• Manage the daily activities of the Handbook of Texas, including origination of new content, corrections, correspondence, data management, distribution through primarily digital means, budgeting, and staff/volunteer supervision
• Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate project plans for generating scholarly content for the Handbook of Texas in coordination with the Chief Historian
• Assist with the development of funding to support projects through grants, increasing gifts resulting from the quantity and quality of use, and through the creation of other revenue generating items, such as packaged spin-offs, apps, sponsorships, etc.
• Coordinate with other TSHA staff and external contacts for technical, fiscal, content, and promotional assistance
• Serve as a liaison to TSHA’s Handbook Advisory Committee and external community groups to ensure the highest quality product and maximum usage
• Up to 20% travel is required.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of a master's degree in History or closely related field such as American Studies or Geography
Ability to work in a team environment, meet deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
PC experience using the full Microsoft Office Suite, data management, web development, and email applications and a track record of remaining current with digital publishing efforts.
Excellent written, editorial, interpersonal and public speaking communication skills.
Professional demeanor.
Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
Licenses: Class C Driver's License.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises several employees including research and assistant editors and student interns. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
Work Hours:
This is a full time, exempt position; hours are between 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday through Friday with some weekend duty and travel.
