Murdoch is a university striving to make a difference to the way we live, think and understand each other and the world around us.
The School of Arts plays an important role in the academic life and campus culture of Murdoch University, delivering world-class research across a broad range of disciplines and contributing to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. We teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in creative arts and media, languages, humanities and social sciences. A number of these courses are taught in offshore mode through long-standing partnerships in Singapore, Dubai and Malaysia, and online through Open Universities Australia. Murdoch is particularly proud of its strong expertise in literary and cultural studies, creative writing, theatre and performance, philosophy and media studies.
As a result of the recent curriculum renewal project across the University, Murdoch offers an exciting and innovative undergraduate Major in English and Creative Writing, based around an integrated program of study. Students engage with a cosmopolitan range of canonical and non-canonical fiction, drama and poetry from the Anglophone world, from the Renaissance to the present day, learning to hone their capacity for close reading, reflection, commentary and critique. Through creative and professional writing units they also develop the ability to write a diverse range of literary and other genres. Upon completion of the Major, our graduates are skilled in methods of critical analysis and argument, fluent in oral and written expression and confident in their ability to undertake critical and creative work.
In order to broaden the focus of the English and Creative Writing Major, the School is now seeking to appoint an endowed Krishna Somers Lecturer in English and Postcolonial Literature who will make a significant contribution to teaching and research. The successful candidate should be familiar with postcolonial and diaspora theory, their decisive primary texts as well as with literary theory as a whole. A solid mastery of English literary history is essential, and reasonable proficiency in a language other than English is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will have a PhD and a demonstrated potential for high-quality publications in the field, and will also exhibit a high level of written and oral communication skills. Recent experience in teaching at undergraduate level is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will be required to teach across units offered by the program, develop an active research and publishing plan, apply for nationally competitive grants, publish in international refereed journals, and supervise postgraduate students. Expectations are commensurate with level of appointment.
