of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion (www.fsnhp.msstate.edu).
This position is a senior level administrative position to provide leadership and
vision for the departmental disciplines of food science, nutrition and health
promotion.
The Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion is located on
the Starkville Campus, although one faculty member is located at the Coastal
Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, MS. Mississippi State University
(www.msstate.edu) has a student population of more than 20,000 that come from
all cultures and backgrounds, from 50 states, and more than 70 countries.
Starkville is a thriving community with good schools and a wide variety of cultural
and SEC sporting events.
The Department offers two BS degrees, one in food science, nutrition and health
promotion and one in culinology, with concentrations in a nationally IFT-approved
food science program, food processing, food safety, culinology, and a nationally
ACEND-accredited dietetic/nutrition program. MS and PhD degrees are offered
in food science and nutrition and an MS in health promotion. An accredited
Dietetic Internship Program is also offered. The Department offers industry and
community-based Extension programs, aimed at enhancing growth of the food
industries and improving the nutrition and health of our citizens and communities.
Examples of the Extension/outreach programs include HACCP, Food Defense,
Food Security, ServSafe, and Marination 101 short courses, among others. The
Department hosts USDA-ARS sponsored research programs in the Center for
Food Safety and Post-Harvest Technology. In addition to food safety research,
our food science research encompasses all aspects of food produced in the state
of Mississippi. The nutrition and health research and extension programs include
prevention of obesity and associated chronic diseases, and various communitybased
health programs and projects.
Responsibilities: Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the
following:
• Provide day to day and long-term leadership for the Department. Provide
direction to faculty, staff and students to achieve and enhance the goals of
the Department.
• Support and coordinate the teaching, research and extension missions of
the Department. The Department head is expected to work to assist
faculty in increasing external funding opportunities for faculty. The
department head is also expected to facilitate research collaboration
between Department faculty and federal and state agencies.
• Lead efforts to increase gifts and endowments to support the
Department’s work and enhance and showcase its scholarship.
• Demonstrate experience with assessment and
accreditation/reaccreditation processes.
• Serve as a spokesperson for contemporary issues related to the
department’s mission and focus.
Qualifications: Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in food science
and technology, food safety, human nutrition, health promotion, or related field,
and relevant administrative experience. The successful candidate must have
technical and interpersonal skills to communicate with other scientists and
administrators nationally and internationally. Experience in oral presentations,
writing reports, proposals and technical publications is required. Familiarity with
state and federal organizations, and the ability to attract extramural funding from
grant agencies and industry is expected. The candidate must be capable of
national and international travel. The successful candidate must meet the
requirements for appointment as full professor with tenure in the Department of
Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion.
Salary and benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience. The tentative start date for the position is August 1, 2015.
