Institution Type: | Other |
Location: | Ohio, United States |
Position: | Post-Doctoral Fellow |
The Western Reserve Historical Society working with the Department of History of Case Western Reserve University invites applications for a one-year (with possible renewal for a second year) post-doctoral fellowship focused on technology and/or social philanthropy in the American Gilded Age and after. The fellowship is available to individuals with a Ph.D. in US history.
The fellowship is part of the “Wade Family Project,”[ http://bit.ly/1oKYwcd and https://thewadeproject.wordpress.com/about/] at the Western Reserve Historical Society. That project is focused on an examination of the role of Jeptha Homer Wade (1811-1890) and his family, including two generations of his descendants, as economic, social, and cultural entrepreneurs in the Gilded Age and into the 1920s. Wade was one of the founders of Western Union and he and his family played a seminal role in the creation of a variety of cultural institutions in Cleveland, Ohio, most particularly the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The “Wade Fellow” will conduct research in the extensive Wade Family archives at the Historical Society as well as in relevant sources held elsewhere to place the family’s history into a broader national and international context of technological and cultural development during the Gilded Age and after. The Fellow will also be invited to teach a course or seminar in the Department of History at Case Western Reserve University as well as be invited to participate in departmental colloquia and meetings.
The expectations for the Fellowship are the production of a publishable paper topically related to the Wade Family as well as assistance with the development of specific metadata to facilitate a rich discovery layer for the archives (online and in-house). The Fellow will work with the Director of the Wade Family Project and the Senior Vice President for Research and Publications at the Historical Society.
The Historical Society will provide office space, and a salary of $40,000 (renewable for a second year depending on funding). The Fellowship is supported by the George Garretson Wade Charitable Trust.
Applications should include: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement explaining the importance of the project to the candidate’s scholarly interests and intellectual development, a sample publication, and three letters of recommendation. Applications should be sent to: Dr. John Grabowski at the Western Reserve Historical Society, 10825 East Boulevard, Cleveland, OH 44106 (email: jjg4@case.edu). All application materials must be received by April 7, 2015. The term of the fellowship will commence during the last week of August, 2015.
