Clark University, International Development, Community, and Environment (IDCE)
Director
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Massachusetts, United States |
Position: | Director, Other Professional |
~~Clark University seeks a visionary leader to serve as Director of the Department of International Development, Community, and Environment (IDCE). IDCE is at an exciting point in its history. Established in 2000, IDCE is an intellectually innovative unit where faculty and students engage in teaching, research, and practice combining rigorous scholarship with a commitment to achieve social, economic, and environmental justice in international and domestic settings. Undergraduate and graduate students are drawn to its transdisciplinary culture where their education is shaped by faculty from a wide range of scientific and social science backgrounds and an international student body. IDCE is deepening its interdisciplinary contributions to teaching, research, and practice in several key areas: climate change, education, energy, forced migration, and health.
We seek a dynamic and entrepreneurial leader with a creative vision of the department’s future trajectory, who will build on IDCE’s commitment to interdisciplinary program development across the domains of research, practice, and teaching. The director is charged with advancing IDCE’s research, teaching and external relations. One of the major opportunities for the new director will be to provide intellectual, strategic and administrative leadership for the next phase of IDCE’s development. For example, IDCE may soon evolve from a department into a school.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar or practitioner of wide-ranging intellectual curiosity who can articulate and implement a unified vision for IDCE that clearly reflects shared objectives and values. An ideal candidate will have a proven record of developing, financing, and administering integrative programs. He or she will also enjoy a well-developed academic and/or professional network that includes donors and foundations interested in the intersections among international and community development, environmental science, sustainability, and/or Geographic Information Science. She or he must embrace the highest academic and intellectual standards and foster a culture of rigorous research and scholarship while maintaining IDCE’s commitment to undergraduate and graduate level education.
The director will take a leadership role in helping IDCE build partnerships and fundraise, and will maintain strong positive relationships with Clark’s administration and Board of Trustees. A successful candidate will have a hands-on approach, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to inspire IDCE’s many constituencies. The director must have the managerial and organizational skills to navigate effectively within a participatory decision-making setting, build strong relationships with internal program directors and chairs of other departments and schools, earn the respect of faculty, staff and students, and encourage communication and collaboration across disciplines.
Clark University is committed to sustaining a diverse and inclusive community that cultivates ethical and well-informed citizens. We especially welcome candidates who can contribute to this mission through research, teaching, and service. We are an affirmative action/equal employment opportunity university and we strongly encourage women and members of minority groups to apply.
