The Midwest Center for Holocaust Education (MCHE), located in suburban Kansas City, invites applications for the full-time position of Public Historian, to begin as soon as possible, preferably by March 1. We are especially interested in candidates who bring a strong interest and extensive background in Holocaust history coupled with specific knowledge of contemporary genocides. Applicants must hold an advanced degree in public history or history specifically related to the Holocaust. A Ph.D. is preferred but not required.
Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent scholarship, balanced with a strong commitment to developing educational resources and outreach programs that engage both academic and general community audiences. Requirements include strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, digital media and website management (using a Word Press content management system). Experience and enthusiasm in organizing, creating, publicizing, and presenting public programs, facilitating conferences, and interacting with board members, volunteers and donors would be to the candidate’s advantage.
MCHE’s Public Historian will report to the Executive Director and will work in tandem with the Director of Education to design resources and present outreach programs that further the mission of the organization: to teach the history of the Holocaust, applying its lessons to counter indifference, intolerance, and genocide. Additionally, the Public Historian will serve as liaison to the center’s interdisciplinary, academic roundtable of regional college and university faculty (HEART – Holocaust Education Academic Roundtable) and as administrator for a Certificate in Holocaust Studies, a new initiative organized by the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education in partnership with private and public post-secondary institutions. Equally important are the candidate's interpersonal skills and the ability to connect to the lay community through educational and commemorative programming.
Founded in 1993 by Holocaust survivors, the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education is located at the Jewish Community Campus in Overland Park, KS. Our small team is comprised of professionals willing to step outside the boundaries of their defined job descriptions in order to benefit the organization and support their co-workers.

This exempt, salaried position includes time off for major Jewish and federal holidays, paid vacation and personal leave, and a monthly subsidy for group health insurance provided by the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City. Annual beginning salary: low to mid 40s.
