The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures in the School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington invites applications for a tenure-track position as assistant professor in Modern Arabic Literature and Culture (19th century-present). Research specialization can be in any field of modern Arabic literary studies or other forms of cultural production, such as theater, visual arts, music, film, and social media, on such contemporary topics as modernity, political and social reform, gender issues, and religious movements in the Arab world. The appointment begins August 1, 2015.
Prior teaching experience and evidence of an active research agenda are required. The successful candidate must possess a native or near-native command of Modern Standard Arabic and English and must be prepared to teach a variety of undergraduate courses on modern Arabic literature in translation, as well as upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in Arabic. A functional knowledge of the classical Arabic literary tradition is expected.
Candidates must have the Ph.D. at time of appointment and demonstrate a commitment to research, teaching, public engagement, and program development with Indiana University’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, as well as the School of Global and International Studies.
