The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha opened to great acclaim in December 2008. It houses one of the world's most distinguished and important collections of Islamic art ranging from Spain to India, dating from the 7th to the 19th centuries, and encompasses arts of all kinds. Particularly important are the collections of early Qurans and other manuscripts, inlaid metalwork, carpets and textiles.
MIA is seeking an experienced, energetic candidate for the full-time position of Curator for Early Iran and Central Asia. MIA curators are responsible for the interpretation and public presentation of MIA’s collection adhering to internationally recognised guidelines for standards and practices. This includes object cataloguing, research and publications; display and exhibition development; responding to enquiries from researchers and the public; advising on acquisitions; liaising closely with museum education colleagues and also with conservation, exhibitions, and collections management teams; maintaining professional relationships with other institutions both regionally and internationally, and participating in professional development opportunities.
The Curator for Early Iran and Central Asia will report to the Head of the Curatorial and Research Department. The Curatorial and Research Department is part of the MIA Collections Division, which also includes the Conservation, Exhibitions, Collections Management, and Publication Departments.
The post is full-time, based in Doha, and attracts a competitive salary and benefits package.
Essential requirements:
- PhD in Islamic art history, archaeology, or a relevant subject
- A high level of subject-specific expertise in Early Iran and Central Asia (8th – 13th centuries CE)
- Expertise in glass, ceramics, and/or metalwork
- Relevant European and Middle Eastern languages
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven record of being a collegial team member
- Willingness and enthusiasm to mentor Qatari colleagues and interns
- Ability to work to deadlines both independently and collaboratively
- A strong work ethic and attention to detail
Desirable skills:
- Oral and written communication skills in Arabic
- A strong academic publication record
- Minimum two years of museum experience
- Experience working in the Middle East
- Proficiency in database software (KEMu preferred)
