New North American Studies Position: Assistant Professor in Post-1945 U.S. Cultural/Social History/Studies
The Department of North American Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University in Prague, the Czech Republic (http://kas.fsv.cuni.cz/ASFSVEN-1.html) is announcing a vacancy for a full-time academic position of assistant professor in U.S. Cultural/Social History/Studies. While the Search Committee will consider candidates from a variety of disciplines, consideration will be given to those who specialize in recent and contemporary U.S. cultural/social history/studies, primarily since the end of the Cold War. All candidates must satisfy the requirements specified below. The deadline for applications is (January 31, 2015), midnight Central European time.

Required:
PhD in hand by October 1, 2015 at the latest
Specializing in:
U.S. Studies (and/or) Migration Studies, Urban Studies, Social Policy Studies, Latino/a Studies, Black Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies – especially focusing on engagement with national government, policy/politics, history, memory and/or identity
Post-1945, including but primarily since the end of the Cold War to the present day
With some record and a clear potential for high level professional (academic and policy) research outputs
Experience in international education (study abroad, international students, international collaboration) – the position will conduct academic international relations for the department
A demonstrated record of versatility and breadth in teaching, academic service, and administrative duties (including co-editing departmental publications, grant writing, international collaboration)
Preferred:
Ability to teach methodological courses such as Introduction to the Study of North American Society and Culture, including fields such as (and/or) American Studies, Social/Cultural History, (Socio)cultural Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural Studies
Ability to teach introductory courses on U.S. modern history, U.S. culture or U.S. society
Ability to deploy academic expertise to current public policy debates in the U.S.
Ability to publish research in high-profile journals relevant to the field of expertise
Some record and a potential for supervising theses on a wide variety of topics
Research experience in a language other than English; willingness to learn Czech
A demonstrated record of ability to adjust to and succeed in different administrative, cultural and social systems (such as living and working in a “foreign” country)
The position includes:
Teaching load of 3/3 courses
Academic service, including consultation, supervision of undergraduate and Master’s theses
Research and publishing in leading scholarly and professional journals, and with renowned presses
Administrative duties, including co-editing departmental publications, grant writing, international collaboration
