The Department of History of the College of Charleston invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in pre-colonial African history, with preference given to applicants whose research and teaching focus on west or central Africa. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in African history by August 2015, when the position begins. The successful candidate will be able to contribute to the African Studies Program, as well as the Program in the Carolina Low Country and Atlantic World and other interdisciplinary programs. Candidates must have a firm commitment to undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts and sciences environment. In addition to upper-level and graduate courses in pre-colonial Africa, the ability to teach general education pre-modern and/or modern history surveys is essential. Promise of excellence in teaching and research are required; teaching experience and publications are preferred. Initial interviews of selected applicants will be conducted via Skype.
