Columbia University, History
Open Rank: History of the US and East Asia
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | New York, United States |
Position: | Full Professor |
The Department of History at Columbia University invites applications and nominations for a distinguished scholar at any rank, from tenure-track assistant professor through full professor with tenure, to fill the Borg Professorship in the History of the United States and East Asia, named in honor of the historian Dorothy Borg. Defined broadly as international history involving the United States in East Asia, the field includes the history of US-East Asian relations, comparative history, and other transnational approaches to American and East Asian history. The position requires that its occupant engage in archival research in both U.S. and Asian materials and be fluent in an East or Southeast Asian language. A senior appointment will occupy the Dorothy Borg Professorship in the History of the United States and East Asia. Junior candidates may become candidates for the chair at some later date. Because this position is intended to cross conventional national borders of historical specialization, we hope to attract candidates whose scholarship ventures beyond the binational relations between the United States and an Asian country. Scholars working in comparative and transnational history are particularly welcome to apply, as are those specializing in the broader history of American-East Asian and American-Southeast Asian relations. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate's field of expertise and in the foundational curriculum of the department and of Columbia College; it is anticipated that the faculty member will also wish to take part in the scholarly community and programs of Columbia University's Weatherhead East Asian Institute.
Inquiries about the position should be addressed to the chair of the search committee, Professor Charles Armstrong, at cra10@columbia.edu.
