Assistant/Associate Professor of History
Associate Director of the Center for the Humanities and Information
The Pennsylvania State University Department of History invites applications for a scholar working in any historical field who uses quantitative, geomapping, data-mining or other large-scale methods of research, who will serve as advanced assistant or associate professor of History, and as Associate Director of Penn State`s new Center for the Humanities and Information commencing August 2015. Applicants should have scholarly records commensurate with those ranks at major research universities, and should present evidence of a capacity to contribute both to the Department and to the Center`s development. Though all applications will be considered, our strong preference is for scholars working on periods before 1900, and on geographical locations outside the United States. The History Department at Penn State is active in research, with a broad undergraduate major and a commitment to small, highly focused areas of graduate admissions and training. The Center focuses on the role information plays in the production of social meaning and value across the human sciences, from the orality-literacy transition to the new digital media. Addressing questions of information's role in government, social memory, communication, literature and culture, philosophy, and history, the Center supports faculty and graduate students with visiting, predoctoral, and faculty fellowships, bringing together each year an interdisciplinary group of scholars who read and think widely across fields and across information as a concept. To apply, submit cover letter, CV and the names of three references at https://app2.ohr.psu.edu/Jobs/External/EVMS2_External/currentap1.cfm#53257. Application review will begin October 13, 2014 and continue until the position is filled.
