Assistant Professor, 20th Century U.S. History
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Minnesota, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor |
Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the Department of History to begin September 1, 2015.
Minimum Required Qualifications: We seek candidates who have completed all requirements for a doctorate in U.S. History by December 31, 2014. The History Department’s curriculum seeks to balance national histories with a greater emphasis on global and regional connections, as well as the role of historically underrepresented racial, ethnic, and cultural minority groups. Therefore, we seek candidates specializing in the intersections of two or more of the following areas: culture, politics, immigration/ethnicity, and the U.S. in a global context. The successful candidate will have teaching experience, as well as an active research agenda that focuses primarily on the U.S. in the 20th Century. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in teaching. A commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising is essential.
Preferred Qualifications: We are especially interested in applicants who complement our departmental strengths in gender, transnational, race/ethnicity, social, and world history, and who can demonstrate sympathy with the mission of a Liberal Arts college. Ability to teach public history a plus. Gustavus has a strong institutional commitment to diversity and candidates should explicitly address how they might promote and support diversity efforts on campus and in the curriculum.
Major/Essential Functions: The normal course load is 6 courses per year, divided among two semesters and a January Term (3-0-3, 2-1-3, or 3-1-2). Primary teaching responsibilities will include U.S. survey courses, intermediate and upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, the historiography seminar and capstone for history majors, and supervision of honors theses. Other responsibilities will include contributing to General Education programs, such as the College’s First Term Seminar, January Term, the Three Crowns Curriculum, as well as interdisciplinary majors and minors. Gustavus faculty are also expected to engage in service to the college and department, and in scholarly research and writing.
Electronic application is required; email application materials as PDFs to ushistorysearch@gustavus.edu. The application packet must include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statements of teaching philosophy and research interests, graduate transcripts (scanned copies acceptable), and two syllabi (one U.S. post-Civil War survey and one intermediate or seminar level) with a description of writing assignments. Three confidential letters of recommendation should be sent directly from the references or letter service. Please do not send writing samples now; only AHA interviewees will be asked to provide them. The cover letter and letters of recommendation should be addressed to Dr. David Obermiller, Search Chair; Department of History, Gustavus Adolphus College, 800 W College Ave, Saint Peter, MN 56082-1498. Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2014. Preliminary interviews will be conducted at the AHA annual meeting. Applications received after October 29, 2014, may not be reviewed in time to offer AHA interviews.
