The University of Zurich invites applications for a Assistant Professorship with Tenure Track for Modern
Indian / South Asian Studies
The position should be filled as soon as possible. The Professorship is supported by the Mercator Foundation Switzerland.
The successful candidate is expected to specialize in recent social, political, religious and cultural
developments and transformations in South Asia and to have experience in interdisciplinary
cooperation. The position requires knowledge of at least one South-Asian language and expertise in
the methods of empirical social research. The social scientific orientation of the professorship should
be visible in both teaching and research.
Candidates should hold a PhD degree in Modern Indian / South Asian Studies or Anthropology,
Gender Studies, Geography, Media Studies, Political Sciences, Religious Studies or Sociology (with a
focus on South Asia). Since administrative work is conducted in German at the University of Zurich,
non-German speaking candidates are expected to acquire a working knowledge of German within the
first two years of appointment. In order to increase the number of women in leading academic
