University of Sydney, FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND PLANNING
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN ARCHITECTURE
|Institution Type:||College / University|
REFERENCE NO. 1604/0713A
The University of Sydney is Australia's first university with an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence, and employs over 7300 permanent staff supporting over 50,000 students. The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, from its foundation in 1918 as the first faculty of architecture in Australia, has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, which attracts the highest quality applicants in Australia.
Our activities range through architecture, design, planning, art, engineering, IT, science and social sciences and we have the disciplinary range to respond to the great and conflicting challenges of our time – global urbanisation and global sustainability. We also have one of Australia’s best built environment laboratory infrastructures, including the only IEQ Lab (Indoor Environmental Quality) in the Southern Hemisphere and our illumination labs are currently undergoing a major upgrade to respond to new technological opportunities. We have a major and ongoing investment in CNC and digital 3D modelling and fabrication. As well as our scientific and technical capabilities, we also have a distinguished record in architectural activism, humanities and intellectual enquiry.
Architecture provides teaching in the undergraduate Bachelor of Design in Architecture program and the postgraduate Master of Architecture program. We have recently established design-based Master of Philosophy and PhD programs in addition to the traditional Master of Philosophy and PhD programs. Key areas of teaching are design, communications, architectural technologies, professional practice, history and theory.
We have recently appointed nine new faculty members. We now seek to appoint an Associate Professor to join our team to consolidate our reputation as an international centre for architecture which makes a real difference to the discipline and what it offers humanity. We are particularly interested in applicants with disciplinary leadership, whether in research, research training – related to the new design-based PhD, education – or in course direction.
You will provide academic and management leadership for the discipline, participate in strategic planning at discipline and faculty levels, and assist in developing and driving the discipline’s pedagogical and research agendas. It is expected you will undertake the role of Head of Architecture at an appropriate time.
The role involves teaching in architecture courses and undertaking research or research-led practice which advances architecture and its contribution to humanity. This may be through theory, praxis or research-led practice.
You will play an appropriate role in teaching the curricula at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and in particular attract and supervise higher degree research students (both for traditional thesis based research and for the new design-based PhD program) and postdoctoral candidates. You will extend and develop your research area by means of traditional and/or non-traditional research outputs and external grant applications. You will develop and foster a culture of research collaboration in the discipline, mentor junior researchers, and develop the basis for research collaborations across the Faculty and more widely within the University.
To be successful in the position, you will have as a minimum requirement:
- professional qualifications and experience as an architect with evidence of highly innovative work in theory or practice which is receiving international acknowledgement for its innovation, insight, experimentation or advancement of architecture
- international reputation and track record for research (including innovative architectural practice), and a demonstrated ability to obtain funding to support architectural research and/or engagement
- demonstrable capacity to initiate and drive collaborative cross-disciplinary research, teaching and engagement
- evidence of ability to attract and supervise higher degree research students and postdoctoral candidates
- evidence of ability to envision new directions of research to anticipate changes in the field of architecture
- demonstrated teaching ability at tertiary level
- experience in academic leadership and management
- demonstrated experience in curriculum development and reform.
The position is full-time continuing subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The faculty will consider the possibility of a fractional appointment if appropriate.
Remuneration package: $158K p.a. including a base salary of up to $134K, leave loading and up to 17% superannuation. Level of appointment will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Some assistance towards relocation cost and visa sponsorship will be available for the successful appointee if required.
All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website. Visit sydney.edu.au/recruitment and search by the reference number for more information and to apply.
