The Department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, invites applications for an annual appointment for a full-time, non-tenure-track position in Twi (Akan) beginning Fall 2014. The position will be a one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal. Salary and title to be commensurate with qualifications and experience; the position carries a full package of University benefits. Responsibilities for the position will include teaching duties (of up to 20 credit hours, or 6 classes, per year), designing new courses (including a third year of instruction in Twi language and a course on Twi Folklore and Culture), producing instructional materials, and participating in professional workshops, depending on the qualifications of the candidate and the needs of the department.
Minimum qualifications are a post-secondary degree, a minimum of 3 years of teaching Twi language and culture in a North American institute of higher education, competence in communicative, learner-centered language pedagogy and the creative use of instructional technology, and native or near-native fluency in both Twi and English. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of commitment to dynamic and effective teaching and demonstrate preparedness to teach general courses in Twi/Akan culture. The ideal applicant will additionally possess the skills to coordinate multiple sections of a course and supervise adjunct instructors as well as to participate in curriculum development for the major and minor programs in African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures.
