Interacting Minds Centre (IMC) at the Department of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for the position of assistant professor in population science and interaction modelling. The appointment begins on 1 February 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
The assistant professorship is a three-year position affiliated with the Interacting Minds Centre (IMC). IMC is an interdisciplinary, strategic research centre at Aarhus University with access to state-of-the-art experimental infrastructure and strong international connections.
The assistant professor is expected to participate in the daily activities of the centre, such as research, lectures, seminars and workshops, as well as supervise students. The successful candidate is also expected to take part in organisational and administrative tasks. We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate international commitment and ability to collaborate with key areas of national and international research in the fields of population science and interacting modelling.
Research
The assistant professor should develop models and simulations of agents in interactions at IMC and at the Interdisciplinary Center for Organizational Architecture (ICOA), Aarhus University as well as contribute to experiments at the newly established Cognition and Behaviour Lab at Aarhus University. This entails working in interdisciplinary teams and across disciplinary and institutional boundaries at the interface between social sciences, biological sciences and cognitive sciences.
Education
The assistant professor is expected to develop relevant courses at undergraduate and/or graduate level as well as participate in the teaching of ordinary courses. The successful candidate is also expected to participate in teaching and educational development.
Knowledge exchange
The assistant professor is expected to exchange knowledge with various sectors of society and to contribute actively to the general public debate in areas related to the position.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a field relevant to the described research area. The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate:
- Background knowledge in the design of simulation models of complex adaptive systems or similar
- Thorough knowledge of population models and evolutionary theory
- Experience in experimental work with interactions and/or behavioural economy
- Experience and interest in interdisciplinary and international research cooperation
- Interest in the application of innovative teaching methods, such as new forms of classroom instruction and collaborative student involvement
- Interest in knowledge exchange.
If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, he or she will be expected to learn Danish within a period of two years.

Research environment
The Interacting Minds Centre (IMC) provides an interdisciplinary platform for the study of human interaction. It involves researchers from the humanities, social sciences, cognitive sciences, biology and clinical research. By bringing these fields together to bridge topics related to human interaction, IMC becomes a unique methodological and theoretical centre of research and inquiry. The Department of Culture and Society
The focus of the teaching and research activities of the Department of Culture and Society is the interplay between culture and society in time and space:
- From the traditional disciplines of the humanities and theology to applied social research
- From antiquity to the issues facing contemporary societies
- From familiar Danish cultural forms to other - and very different - worlds
- From local questions to global challenges.
The department encompasses a range of strong research and degree programmes, which in dialogue with each other and with society work to develop innovative ways of addressing issues of topical or general interest. Faculty of Arts
