POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN SHAKESPEARE STUDIES

The Shakespeare and Performance Research Team, McGill University, seeks a postdoctoral fellow to join a research project (2014-18), “The Art and Politics of Shakespearean Narrative.” The project will develop a new, interdisciplinary account of the artistic, social, intellectual, and historical dimensions of Shakespearean narrative by bringing together theatre history and practice, literary scholarship, legal and historiographical theory, and moral and aesthetic philosophy.  For more information, please see http://www.mcgill.ca/iplai/research/art-and-politics-shakespearean-narrative.

The Shakespearean Narrative project is headquartered at the Institute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas at McGill University and also includes members from Concordia University, Carleton University, and the University of Alberta. The research team includes Shakespearean scholars such as Michael Bristol, Meredith Evans, Wes Folkerth, Fiona Ritchie, Carolyn Sale, and Paul Yachnin; theatre scholars and practitioners like Patrick Leroux and Myrna Wyatt Selkirk; and award-winning playwright, director, and novelist Kent Stetson. The project also is joined by a number of scholars in other disciplines, including David Davies (Philosophy), Martin Kreiswirth (American Literature; Theory), Desmond Manderson (Law), Mark Antaki (Law), and Mark Salber Phillips (History).

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work mainly on his or her own research and publication; he or she will also, by serving as Project Management Assistant, receive training in research administration, including collaborative research and publication coordination, event planning, and website development—skills that are indispensible inside and outside the academy. He or she will contribute to the project and also gain valuable professionalization experience. The Fellow might also have opportunities to teach in his or her area of specialization.

The start date for the year-long position is August 1, 2014. There is the possibility of a one-year renewal. Candidates will have a PhD in Shakespeare studies and/or Early Modern English Literature. The fellowship stipend will be $35,000+ per annum.
