The Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) is seeking a historian who specializes in Middle Eastern history to teach a range of courses on the modern Middle East as well as survey courses in World History. The department seeks candidates who are not only committed to both teaching and research excellence, but who can also contribute to a rich interdisciplinary atmosphere. The successful candidate will have experience with the North American higher educational system and have perfect mastery of English. AUS is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and by the Ministry of Higher Education in the UAE. All instruction (except languages) is in English, and English is widely spoken throughout the United Arab Emirates.
The university is located 10 miles from the center of Sharjah City and 15 miles from the city of Dubai. The Emirate of Sharjah is situated between the shores of the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and has beautiful beaches and lovely varied countryside. The architecturally distinctive campus, located on 316 acres, includes nine academic buildings; administration, library and athletic structures; and accommodations for faculty, staff and students. Academic buildings are equipped with state-of-the art science, engineering and language laboratories, digital studios and computer facilities. Currently, AUS has approximately 5,225 students, 351 full-time faculty and over 400 full-time staff.
