The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization seeks to appoint a tenure-track or tenured professor in Jewish history and culture, with special emphasis on the civilization of Spanish-Portuguese Jewry both within the Iberian Peninsula and throughout the Sephardic diaspora. The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of Jewish literature and culture of the Iberian Peninsula in both Hebrew and Arabic and be able to study them within their Islamic – Arabic contexts. Ideally, the candidate will also be conversant with the history and culture of Christian Iberia in the Middle Ages. It is expected that the successful candidate will participate actively in both the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Program in Medieval Studies. The appointment is expected to begin July 1, 2014. The appointee will teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Harvard is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
