The College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University invites applications for a newly established position as a professor in Entrepreneurship and Economic Development. The college is hiring a faculty member at the rank of professor or senior associate professor. Candidates must have established a distinguished academic record as evidenced by holding a Ph.D. and a senior tenured position at a major university. This position is being made possible by a TAMU commitment to leverage existing strengths and entrepreneurial activities at Texas A&M University to enhance both basic and applied research with respect to economic development, new venture creation, and entrepreneurial activity.
The nationally prominent candidates will evidence an active research agenda that analyzes the role of institutions, public policies, and underlying socioeconomic factors in fostering or discouraging entrepreneurial activity. In addition, the scholars will serve as prominent members of the faculty within one of the College of Liberal Art’s departments where active mentorship of graduate students is encouraged.
Required Candidate Qualifications: A research agenda related to entrepreneurship and economic development, an established record of working collaboratively with research teams, preferably including scholars from a variety of disciplines, a strong record of mentoring PhD students, and a strong publication record commensurate with appointment as a Full Professor in one of the Departments in the College of Liberal Arts. Successful candidates will be expected to publish, seek outside grants and funding, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and supervise graduate students.
Topical Areas of Research
The successful candidate will have a research record in an area relevant to the advancement of our understanding of entrepreneurial behavior and the role of entrepreneurship in furthering economic development. Potential areas include, but are not limited to:
- property rights and institutions
- principles of contract design
- culture, including a “culture of hope,” and the associated impact on entrepreneurship
- technology (including, e.g., service sectors, agrarian production, energy development, and IT)
- decision making
- models of self-employment
- models of innovation and research and development
- social frames and networks
- organizational and institutional forms
- risk aversion/risk taking
- franchising
- financial market, capital constraints, credit conditions
- demographics (e.g., race, gender, educational attainment)
- taxation and subsidies (direct and indirect)
- liability and legal structure
- presence or absence of a “culture of hope”
- critical and/or historical approaches
The search will remain open until the position is filled with a preferred start date on or before August 31, 2014. The upper administration at Texas A&M has recently approved several new senior faculty positions under the umbrella of a “Grand Challenges” University research initiative. One of the Grand Challenge areas is titled Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, and this initiative includes a position in the College of Liberal Arts. The boilerplate description is below:
