Department of Film and Media Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara
The Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks to appoint a mediamaker-scholar whose work encompasses production, theory, and history as a tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2014.
We seek candidates who are committed to conceptually innovative approaches to production practices, using contemporary media platforms to foster imaginative modes of research and new forms of knowledge. Our ideal colleague should not only theorize production across media old and new, but also develop creative projects that engage theory, history, and/or criticism. Research interests might include (but are not restricted to): animation; digital platforms and the politics of knowledge; locative media; media ecologies; production design theory; queer media practices; scientific visualization; sensory ethnography; sound studies; surveillance; technology and affect; videogames.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the core areas of our undergraduate and graduate programs, supervise and curate student projects, and develop imaginative production courses that are integrated within a liberal arts curriculum that emphasizes media theory, criticism, and history. The department serves nearly 500 undergraduate majors and 35 doctoral students. Our facilities include a new sound stage, screening rooms, animation and digital media labs, and the state-of-the-art Pollock Theater housed within the Carsey-Wolf Center.
A Ph.D. and/or MFA is normally expected by the time of appointment. MFA candidates who are prepared to work in a research-oriented Film and Media Studies department are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will demonstrate outstanding creative and research potential and a strong commitment to teaching. www.filmandmedia.ucsb.edu
