Tenure-track position in Environmental History, with a specialization in the Americas or Pacific Rim, at the rank of assistant professor, beginning August, 2014. Ph.D. required. Expertise in the history of indigenous peoples or borderlands preferred. The successful candidate will offer courses in Environmental History and in his or her regional specialty, and share the departmental responsibilities for History major requirements and the College’s required first year course, General Studies 145-146. Teaching and research interests that could take advantage of Whitman’s location in the U.S. West, and contribute to the department’s emphases on comparisons and cultural encounters, are desirable. The College provides a generous sabbatical leave program and professional development support for both research and teaching. All applications must include the following materials: letter of application as well as separate statements addressing the candidate’s teaching interests and scholarly/performance agenda; curriculum vitae; three letters of reference; graduate transcripts; and teaching evaluations or other evidence of demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate instruction.
