The Department of History at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in early modern or modern South Asian history to begin August 16, 2014. Along with a strong scholarly record and demonstrated expertise in using South Asian language materials, we encourage applicants to show how their research and teaching will enhance or expand the department’s existing thematic strengths.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment, a strong research agenda, and classroom experience. The Department of History at the University of South Carolina is vibrant, with 500 undergraduate majors, more than fifty graduate students, and one of the oldest and most respected public history programs in the country. The National Research Council has recently ranked its PhD program in the top fifteen of American public universities. Known as one of the university's "centers of excellence", the Department of History offers a strong and diverse program for both undergraduate and graduate students. The faculty includes outstanding scholars in fields ranging from North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe, East Asia, and Africa.

Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, is the center of a greater metropolitan area with a population over 750,000.
