Established in 1907, New York's Japan Society is an internationally recognized nonprofit, nonpolitical organization that provides access to information on Japan, offers opportunities to experience Japanese culture, and fosters sustained and open dialogue on issues important to the United States, Japan, and East Asia.
Director of Education
Reporting to the President, the Director of Education oversees all aspects of Japan Society’s Education Program. Key programs include the recently launched Japan Society Junior Fellows Student Exchange Program and Going Global, a social networking program connecting students in Japan, the United States, and additional nations, as well as a rich suite of professional development programs, online curriculum development, and student and family programs. The Director is responsible for all aspects of the program, including fundraising. The position requires travel to Japan and extensive communication with Japanese partners. Essential duties include:
- Develop and direct Japan Society Education Programs
- Oversee budgeting and fundraising for Education Programs
- Oversee development of Japan Society’s online presence in relation to Education Programs
- Manage education program staff
- Coordinate with other programming areas to develop and implement educational outreach programming to enhance the reach of programs throughout Japan Society
- Maintain high profile of Professional Development activities amongst specialists in educational outreach
Qualifications:
- MA in related field, Ph.D. desired
- Five or more years of broad educational experience in a school, private sector, non-profit, and/or university setting
- Five or more years of managerial experience with demonstrated success in program development and implementation, people and budget management, and fundraising
- Expertise in Japanese studies and/or Pedagogy, or a related field
- Native or near native ability in English
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to speak Japanese with reasonable fluency and read Japanese correspondence
- Strong interpersonal, presentation, and relationship building skills
- Comfort working with technology, and ability to learn about Educational Technology
- Ability to work weekends, nights, and travel
