The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies was formed in 2011 comprising the programs of History, History and Philosophy of Science and Philosophy, the Centre for Classics and Archaeology, the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation and the Centre for Jewish History and Culture.
The new School brings together a lively, engaging and vibrant programme of teaching and research which offers a wide variety of courses and subjects. The School offers its students an opportunity to extend their knowledge and understanding of their historical interests in a range of diverse contexts, as well as to develop their capacity to analyse, think critically and communicate effectively.
The Gerry Higgins Chair of Irish Studies is a position within the Faculty of Arts and the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies created in 1999. Following a review a new focus for the History program and this position has been agreed and generously funded to reflect the interests of Gerry Higgins in Irish Studies.
The appointee will be expected to contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and will initiate, perform and supervise research in Irish Studies, as defined above. A principal duty of the successful appointee will be to foster interdisciplinary activities in Irish Studies in respect to postgraduate education, research and community engagement within the Faculty of Arts.
