Dean of the Graduate School
|Institution Type:||College / University|
|Location:||Wisconsin, United States|
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Graduate School. The Graduate School is a vibrant centerpiece of UWM’s growing mandate for research. The University seeks a distinguished individual to serve as Dean, providing leadership and promoting excellence in all facets of the Graduate School’s activities. As a public urban campus, UWM is unique in the University of Wisconsin System, charged with the dual mission of a PhD-granting institution combined with the commitment to community. Our University is the second largest graduate degree-granting institution in the state, with programs ranging from traditional fields of study to innovative new paths that reach across multiple disciplines. Both UWM and its Graduate School are in a vital phase of expansion. The Graduate School has launched many new programs and expanded doctoral enrollments by 70 percent in the past ten years. In just the last six years, university research expenditures have increased by over 50 percent. The University is intent on increasing the level of extramural support and the number of doctoral programs, enhancing the ratio of graduate-to-undergraduate students, supporting a diverse student population, and continuing to increase the quantity and quality of research and scholarship.
The Dean will exercise responsibility for the Graduate School’s academic and administrative operations, including personnel, budget, programs, and physical facilities. The Dean will also be responsible for developing strong relationships with external constituents, maintaining effective partnerships campus wide, and the dynamic representation of the Graduate School within the University and the community. The Dean will sit on the Chancellor’s Extended Cabinet to contribute to the guidance and future vision of the University. The position of Dean requires an earned doctoral degree as well as a distinguished academic record, commensurate with a tenured appointment as a full Professor of a department in the University. Commitment to shared governance, the capacity to provide strong academic leadership, and relevant administrative experience are required qualifications. The new Dean of the Graduate School must possess a keen awareness of the promise and context of graduate programs in public universities.
