Experimental Media Practices (60 %)
Your tasks: The Institute of Research in Art and Design (IDK – Institut Design-und Kunstforschung) develops and carries out fundamental, application-oriented research projects at the converging point between design, media arts, science and technology, with a special focus on digital media and cultural techniques. Our research focuses on design theories and methods, knowledge design and experimental media practices. Currently, the institute is building a media lab, which will be up and running at the Dreispitz-Basel campus by 2014. As a senior researcher (m/f), your responsibilities include independently conceiving research and dissemination projects, finding funding and carrying them out within the focus field of experimental media practices, while thereby participating in building up our media lab. Included in your research duties are the organizing and carrying out of conferences, workshops, lecture series and publishing at a high level. Your participation in the international research discourse is expected, as well as your attendance at conferences and establishing networks and cooperation
projects. The administrative tasks connected with these activities are your responsibility. Teaching and developing new teaching formats is desired. Initially, the position will be limited to a period of three (3) years.
Your profile: We are seeking someone who has proven potential for artistic/ academic research, who can conceive and carry out research and dissemination projects independently. You are a degree holder from an academic or artistic/design university (doctoral degree holders preferred) and have several years of research experience in the fields of interaction design, media arts, multi-sensory media, physical computing or a related field. You are very familiar with current media practices and the ongoing discourse. You bring your own designerly/artistic experience and have highly developed skills in software development
and programming. We expect you to have an explicit interest in the following: artistic/designerly and research/theoretical investigation and experimental working methods, insights in sociomaterial implications of post-digital media and design cultures, and interdisciplinary cooperation at the converging point between design, media arts, science and technology. Very good English skills should round off your profile.
