The Department of History at the Ohio State University (Mansfield) invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in Environmental History for the academic year 2013-2014. Candidates with specializations in any geographic region are welcome to apply, provided they are qualified and willing to teach multiple sections of the introductory modern U.S. history survey (History 2002). We define “environmental history” to encompass the history of material life in all its permutations, including the histories of climate, natural ecologies, agriculture, urban formations, infrastructures, disease, animals, and natural resource use, as well as important cultural and political dimensions, such as perceptions of landscape and nature, environmental inequality, and movement politics. An ability to teach classes with a global and/or comparative perspective is preferred. We will show preference for candidates whose research and teaching will contribute to the new Mansfield campus major in Integrated Studies in Environmental Studies as well as the College of Arts & Sciences initiative to enhance research and teaching on sustainability, energy, climate change, disease, technology, and development.
Qualifications: Applicants must hold the Ph.D. at time of appointment and a demonstrated ability for excellence in teaching undergraduate students. They must also demonstrate an active research program. The candidate must have credentials as a teacher and scholar similar to those of a tenure-track assistant professor. Visiting faculty members are eligible to teach at every level of the curriculum.
