Bates College invites applications for an innovative and technically-adept Humanities Librarian. Reporting to the Associate College Librarian for Research Services, this librarian shares a broad range of liaison activities with the other professionals in the unit, including general and specialized research services, individual research consultations, group instruction, and collection development and management. This individual serves as a research partner, an instructional consultant, and a frequent point of contact to a diverse group of faculty and students on informational needs in the assigned subject areas and on issues related to digital projects. This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to play a key role in shaping the support and profile of digital scholarship on campus.
The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in library or information science, or comparable combination of education and work experience, a strong commitment to public service, working knowledge of one foreign language, and a minimum two years academic or research experience related to the work. They will be conversant with current humanities research trends and information-seeking habits of humanists and undergraduates, and incorporate such in classes and one-to-one instructional approaches. Candidates must have proven expertise in digital library technologies, standards, and practices with necessary project management experience. This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as demonstrated success in fostering teamwork, collaboration, and creativity.
Desired qualifications include an advanced degree in one of the related subject areas with a preference for an interdisciplinary humanities focus and/or in a foreign language as well as experience managing a digital repository or digital asset management system.
The Bates College Library is part of an information technology and library services organization headed by the Vice President for Information and Library Services. The library provides rich collections in all areas touched by the Bates curriculum, and has been a leader in the adoption of electronic formats in all areas, including journals, databases, books, and streaming media. The library is a physical and virtual center of research activity on campus with multiple academic support service areas resulting in a lively environment for student learning.
