The American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications and nominations for the position of the Jabre-Khwarizmi Endowed Chair in Arabic and Islamic Science and the Director of the Farouk K. Jabre Center (FJC) for Arabic and Islamic Science and Philosophy to begin September 1, 2013.
The FJC is envisioned as fostering a vibrant interdisciplinary environment and community which expands the store of reliable evidence on the Arabic and Islamic scientific and philosophical legacy; guides hypotheses about its broader significance in the recorded history of these fields; and introduces students, scholars, and the general public to Arabic and Islamic contributions to them. The chair and founding director will provide direction and continuity as the Center evolves; attract promising scholars to participate in its mission of research, education, and outreach; and manage all operations, including planning, budgeting, fundraising, public relations, programming, assessment, and reporting. The chair/director will report to the provost of the University and will have an appointment in the department of History and Archeology.
The chair/director will be an internationally recognized authority in the field of Arabic and Islamic Science who is capable of building a major research center from the ground up. The successful candidate will be a PhD-holder with an active research agenda and an exceptional research and publications record in one or more subfields of the specialty. An enthusiastic teacher and dynamic speaker, she/he will be equally comfortable giving introductory courses to undergraduates, advanced seminars to graduate students, and informative lectures and interviews that target the general public. The chair/director will have proven competence in administration, budgeting, and fundraising; a strong track record in networking and partnership-building; outstanding leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; and the ability to work effectively with people from a broad range of social, political, and cultural backgrounds. Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
