Description: The University College of Virginia Commonwealth University seeks full-time non-tenure track faculty members on 1-3 year renewable appointments for the Department of Focused Inquiry beginning in Fall 2013. Teaching responsibilities include instruction of courses in VCU’s Core Curriculum (UNIV 111, 112, and 200). This three-semester interdisciplinary course sequence is learner-centered and skills based – concentrating on written and oral communication, critical thinking, collaborative learning, information fluency, and ethical reasoning. Students are expected to complete the sequence in their first two years. Faculty members teaching in the Core participate in shared curricula, with the expectation that students across all sections of a course achieve similar learning objectives.
Responsibilities:Successful incumbents will teach UNIV courses and participate actively in faculty development programs, which include opportunities to collaborate on the design of new interdisciplinary Core course offerings. Faculty members participate in committees within the University College and across the University.
Qualifications: Terminal degree preferred; master’s degree in an academic discipline required. Three years of college teaching experience in a general education curriculum or proof of college-level teaching excellence required. Strong communication skills, demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with others, and an interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning are essential. The Core Curriculum program seeks to promote a multidisciplinary approach through a diverse faculty. Successful candidates will provide evidence of strong teaching skills in written and oral communication, critical thinking, information fluency, collaborative learning, and ethical reasoning. Preference is given to candidates desiring to work with a diverse student population in an active, learning-centered community.
